Hobby Lobby Wax Melt Reviews

This is a review of the 8 new DD wax melts from Hobby Lobby for June 2021. In general, I'm not impressed with most of these scents.

I think the best Hobby Lobby (DD brand) wax melts came out in December 2017 and July 2018. There have been some good ones after that, but I liked the 2017-2018 scents the most. With a few exceptions, most of the 2019 and 2020 scents were just "ok" for me, but I think these new scents (with the exception of Grandpa's Chair and maybe Amber Blossoms) are kind of mediocre.

Amber Blossoms
amber, orange blossoms & wildflowers
A lovely, super sweet perfumey floral with a hint of Oriental spice, a bit of honey, and maybe a smidgen of green tea. Looking at the notes, the honey I detect is probably the orange blossoms, which smell like neroli, which can have a bit of a honey note. I don't really smell the orange blossoms per se though. It smells almost exactly like (or might be the same as) ScentSationals Sunflower Fields, ScentSationals Country Sunflower, and Crafters & Co. Wild Sunflowers, and Hallmark Sunflower Fields (which were all the same scent, even though the ScentSationals and Hallmark/Crafters scents are by 2 different companies... the notes for the Crafters scent are "orange zest, citrus blossom, floral tones and sheer musk"), but those scents are slightly sweeter.

Amberwood & Cedar (No. 90)
cedarwood, citrus & patchouli
A warm perfumey scent with ambery, soapy, and milky woodsy (sandalwood) notes, with just a hint of patchouli. It's not too perfumey or overly sweet. The perfumey note smells a little bit like perfume that has gone a little too old, but not in a bad way. It's a nice scent, but kind of basic. Looking at the notes, I don't get any citrus at all.

Citrus & Wild Rose (No. 48)
wild rose, lily & violet
If you're expecting a rose scent based on the name and notes, you'll be disappointed. This scent should be called Cucumber Meadows, as it smells like grass, cucumbers (or aloe), a savory herbal note, and just a tinge of sweetness that could be wildflowers (maybe rose, but I'm not even sure about that). It also has an odd musty note that I really don't like. Melted, it's less savory, slightly sweeter (although still not actually "sweet", and definitely not flora), and takes on a tiny bit of a soapy note. But I still don't detect rose, lily, or violet! This is a weird scent, and I don't care for it.

Crushed Eucalyptus
eucalyptus, santal & cardamom
A salty, very savory herbal scent with a peppery note, like something you'd put in a salad. Sage, maybe? Definitely not eucalyptus, which would smell more like pine and Vicks VapoRub. It doesn't even have the nasal clearing effect that eucalyptus has. It has a hint of a bergamot note that almost gives it a cologney vibe, but it's not a cologney scent at all. It has barely any sweetness, and is very salty, which gives it a tiny bit of a Play-Doh note. Looking at the notes, cardamom is a nutty, buttery version of clove, with a smidgen of fennel and herbal undertones (I'm not getting anything clove-like from this scent). Santal is a sandalwood type scent, and I don't detect that either. It's not a bad scent, but not something I'd want my house to smell like.

Grandpa's Chair
music, oud & bergamot
A fantastic scent of sweet tobacco, and maybe also patchouli and a hint of oud (deep, rich, resinous tree sappy woodsy scent). It's mostly tobacco though, like 80%. And it's sweeter than most sweet tobacco scents, like it might have something else in there like a sweet incensey note or even a floral. Looking at the notes, there's the oud. Bergamot is added to scents to give them a cologney note, although I don't detect any cologney notes in this scent. And I didn't hear any music notes, lol! I think this is the best scent out of the bunch, in terms of both scent and throw. It also lasted a long time.

Maple & Cream Latte
coffee beans, coconut milk & maple
This smells like cinnamon French toast (without the bready note) with a bit of maple syrup, served with a cup of coffee. It's a nice breakfast type scent, but not very coffee-ish, and when melting, most of the coffee notes pretty much disappear. It's still quite nice, but similar to a lot of other cinnamon maple type scents. I don't detect coconut at all.

Orange Dreamsicle
orange, grapefruit & sandalwood
This smells just like an orange creamsicle. What else can I say? It's fantastic and sweet, like 85% fake orange (fake in a good way) and 15% sweet, creamy vanilla. I don't smell grapefruit (which would be bitter, although the grapefruit could be the reason for the very slight tart citrusiness of the orange that gives it a little bit of a "Tang" vibe, although it's not overly "orangey"), or sandalwood or any woodsy notes. Just the orange and vanilla.

Vanilla Cashmere & Cedar
vanilla, cedar & patchouli
A milky woodsy scent (sandalwood) with cedar, patchouli, and vanilla. It's sweet but not overly sweet, and a little perfumey. It's slightly more of an incensey scent than a woodsy scent. I like it. Looking at the notes, they're spot on.
